Newport RI is well known for its luxury travel and historic significance. A family trip here is at once classy and fun; these best things to do will entertain everyone.

Newport, Rhode Island was settled in the colonial era both as a refuge for those fleeing religious persecution and as a rich seaport. Today Newport is a famous luxury summer resort town, with many beautifully maintained or refurbished colonial era homes still standing. The sights and activities available in Newport RI make it one of the best US destinations for a luxury summer vacation. These are Luxury Travel's selection of the best activities for Newport family vacations.

Best Summer Activities in Newport, Rhode Island

  1. The Mansion Cliff Walk: This walk brings together a few iconic aspects of Newport, Rhode Island. The Cliff Walk is world famous for its living history - the Gilded Age homes here are meticulously maintained and many are open to the public. Two mansions which are especially worth visiting are Vanderbilt's Marble House, and Beechwood, the Astor summer house. Beechwood in particular brings history to life, with Beechwood Theatre Company actors portraying life in the Victorian Era. The Marble House is also open as a museum, with self-guided audio tours. It is an incredibly glamorous estate, and together with Beechwood, gives an in depth look into Newport's Gilded Age. Also worth touring is The Breakers, another huge Victorian mansion along the Cliff Walk, and Rough Point, where Doris Duke once lived. All mansions on the Cliff Walk overlook the ocean, and the Walk itself makes visitors along a cliff path.
  2. The Norman Bird Sanctuary: This sanctuary is over 300 acres of preserved land, with seven miles of walking trails open to the public. It's the largest area of open land in Rhode Island. The diverse habitats that are covered in those 325-ish acres are home, in turn, to diverse species of birds and other animals. Several science and nature program are offered for children throughout the year. Luxury Travel did an easy hike with children, and everyone was enchanted. To walk through thick forest and suddenly find oneself staring at the open sea is a rewarding experience. Stop in the Visitor's Center for a list of birds that might be seen; many species of hawks, herons, woodpeckers, warblers and more make the Norman Bird Sanctuary their home.
  3. Sweet Berry Farm: There are several farms in Newport (or, literally, two miles away in Middletown RI). Sweet Berry Farm is especially appealing with its pick-your-own fruit. Blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, peaches, apples - whatever is in season can be picked for purchase. Children really enjoy this activity, and it leads them to eating more fresh fruit than they may otherwise! Sweet Berry Farm also grows flowers and vegetables which are sold at its gourmet farm market. The adorable gourmet market sells artisan and prepared food as well. After picking a few boxes of fresh, ripe berries, it feels wonderful to relax on the patio of the Sweet Berry Farm Market with a cold drink. The Farm also exhibits local artists, and sells farm-related gift items.
  4. Harbor Cruises: Several companies run cruises around the Newport Harbor. The historic waterfront area of Newport looks lovely from the water, and experienced guides can rattle off all sorts of information regarding the America's Cup regatta and match races that have been held in Newport. They know a lot about the history of Newport, including that of Fort Adams - which, conveniently, is one of the sights along the way. Luxury Travel recommends the Classic Cruises of Newport and Adirondack II Schooner harbor cruises for the knowledge and good humor of the staff.
  5. Fort Adams: Soldiers once lived here, and now Fort Adams is open to the public. There are special events such as military reenactments and classic vehicle shows, but Fort Adams may be most know for music festivals. It hosts the Newport Jazz Festival and the Newport Folk Festival, both of which are widely known and respected.
