It's not just luxury vacation lovers that seek to island-hop in Hawaii. The Superferry offers an eco-friendly way to travel, and has a discount for farmers and merchants.

"Locally grown" is one of the newest buzzwords in the eco-friendly lexicon, and the travel and tourism industry has embraced it with open arms. Some Fairmont hotels grow herbs on rooftop gardens, the French Laundry in Napa Valley has a large garden across the street from its famous dining room, and many other destinations boast about their local farmers' markets. Now, in Hawaii, the Superferry has formed a partnership with the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation, to also share the wealth of local farm-grown Hawaiian fruits and vegetables between its islands.

The Hawaiian Superferry got off to a rocky start, but since then has been proving itself invaluable as an alternative source of inter-island transportation. This new partnership, which can include a travel discount to farmers and food merchants, edifies the Superferry's growing popularity among local Hawaiians as a viable way to get from, say, Maui to Oahu.

Details of the Hawaii Superferry deal:

  • The partnership is with the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation and Maui County Farm Bureau.
  • The Hawaii Superferry's Island Agricultural Product Discount Program provides a 30% discount to qualified farmers for shipping locally produced goods.
  • The partnership is a cost-effective way to help reduce foreign imports and keep locally grown Hawaiian produce on the islands.
  • The Hawaiian Farm Bureau Federation President, Dean Okimoto, describes the pro-green business partnership as a way to keep "our local farmers viable, as well as keep Hawaii sustainable."
  • Tourists and travelers to the islands of Hawaii will have more access to fresher, more varied local produce.
  • The 30% discount off travel on the Hawaii Superferry applies to farmers and merchants carrying only fresh products grown solely in Hawaii. This includes macadamia nuts, Maui onions, coffee, fruits and vegetables, and farmed meat and poultry as well.

Now, fares for people on vacation in Hawaii are not included in the Superferry discount program. A luxury vacation in Oahu can still be extended with a visit to Maui or Kauai, of course - each island is unique and worth exploring - along with a leisurely ride in the South Pacific on the Hawaii Superferry. The ferry, built on a catamaran with no exposed propellers, is an environmentally friendlier way to island-hop than is a CO2-chewing airplane. The Superferry offers dedication to supporting agriculture, farms and ranch families, plus a leisurely, pampering ride for luxury travelers from one island to another. Can the Hawaii Superferry be part of a "green" luxury vacation on these tropical islands? Absolutely. It's worth the trip.
