Paso Robles Annual Summer Activities and EventsCalifornia's Newest Wine-Growing Region Has Fun Experiences for All
Luxury travel may seem out of reach for families, but Paso Robles offers an affordable upscale experience of a vineyard vacation, with child-friendly activities as well.
Mention California wine country, and most people think of Napa Valley. This makes sense; some of the best wines in the world come out of Napa's best wineries. There are other wine-growing regions in California, though. Santa Barbara comes to mind, of course - but the fastest growing winery region in California may in fact be Paso Robles. It's not quite a secret, but word hasn't quite gotten out about the activities and experiences of a luxury vacation in Paso Robles. A luxury vacation is much more affordable here now, before the rest of the world catches on, than it likely will be in the future. And, unlike Napa Valley, Paso Robles is also a recommended destination for family travel. There are annual summer activities and events here for adults and children alike. Paso Robles Annual Olive Festival - Usually in late August. Olives grow in similar climates as grapes, of course (explaining Italian food and wine). Sample a large variety of food made with olive oil, including ice cream. Paso Robles Rotary Annual Winemaker Cook-off - Early August yearly. 30 regional wineries with national acclaim serve great food off the grill, and are judge by some pretty serious wine and food judges. Trading Day & Kids Flea Market - Usually held in late June. There's the usual assortment of flea market knick-knacks to poke through, but young children can be entertained by a "treasure trove" area as well. Paso Robles Concerts in the Park - Every Friday during the summer. A two-hour concert, outdoors in downtown Paso Robles, and it's free. Summer concerts make for a relaxed and fun evenings. Annual Fourth of July Party - Held July 4, if that's not clear. It's actually the largest July Fourth celebration on California's Central Coast! Lots of fun, and crowds come from all around to celebrate. Mid-State County Fair - Held for around a week and a half, late July - early August. The County Fair is a big deal for the entire region. It's a big fun party, as always, and big-name entertainment is brought in. For example, 2009 has Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw, and other music stars. Paso Robles Wine Tasting - Yes, this would be every day, but summer is a particularly nice time to try out homegrown wines right on the vineyards. There's just something about sipping a cool glass of just-poured wine, while basking in the warm California sun, that can't be beat. The Central Coast Shakespeare Festival - Usually held from mid-July through mid-August. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only, in a beautiful outdoor setting, the Central Coast Shakespeare Company puts on two classics annually. It adds a bit of luxury and class to a family vacation. National Stock Horse Association - Held mid to late August annually, this one-day event is a stock horse competition held at the Paso Robles Event Center. Kids who love horses and want to see some cowboys would have a lot of fun at the horse show. Everyone deserves the luxury of a relaxing California summer vacation, but families shouldn't spend all their savings on one. In Paso Robles there are many activities and events for everyone to enjoy, without worrying about every penny spent. It's an up-and-coming wine growing region with a lot to offer for a tighter budget.
