Couples who plan romantic getaways - for Valentine's Day or otherwise - can choose from long weekends in Hawaii, New York, California and more. Fall in love again!
A romantic getaway is the perfect way to celebrate Valentine's Day, an anniversary, or any other special weekend vacation related to romance and love. If you want to take a long weekend to get away and celebrate (or fall in) love, these are the best places, and sure to suit your romantic tastes.
The US has many places full of history and romance.
Romantic places for couples getaways:
- A bed and breakfast. A bed and breakfast in the country should be cozy and warm, with a sense of privacy (and a fresh breakfast, regardless of how late you sleep in). For luxury during your long romantic weekend, I like The Simpson House Inn; it's the only B&B in North America that's in the 5-star Alliance. The Simpson House Inn is in Santa Barbara, a coastal California town that is beautiful and romantic in and of itself.
- If you plan a romantic getaway in winter, or will take a trip for Valentine's Day, consider the romance of an upscale ski lodge. The best luxury ski resorts offer apres-ski couples' activities like hot tubbing and couples massages. If you love warming up after skiing with hot chocolate and an open fire, a week or weekend at a ski lodge would be perfect. The Four Seasons at Whistler is especially romantic.
- Another popular getaway that is romantic, is also good for the body, mind and spirit. Exclusive, luxury spa resorts almost always offer Valentine's Day specials. If your plans are for an anniversary weekend, let the spa resort know in advance; you'll likely find a bottle of champagne in your room. One highly rated luxury spa resort in California that I love is the Ojai Valley Inn Resort & Spa, and the most famous in North America is probably Canyon Ranch, in Arizona. Both features couples massages in their long lists of spa treatments.
- Romantic vacations abound in the Caribbean. While Jamaica is having some problems with crime, the US Virgin Islands are safer. Honeymoons are popular at the luxury hotels in St. Thomas, while St. John offers a wide variety of lodgings, from cheap eco friendly vacation hotels to luxury resorts (I love the Caneel Bay Resort).
- A Hawaii romantic vacation is easily had, although it won't be cheap. There are many top hotels in Hawaii that have packages for honeymoon weeks and romantic long weekends. The luxury of a long weekend at the Four Seasons Resort in Maui is evidenced by little details like the tailor-made pool side chair covers, and big details like the resort's top rated day spa. Also in Hawaii, The Maui Prince Hotel is serene, with relatively few children - perfect for couples looking for a quiet getaway.
- A Valentine's weekend in Saratoga Springs will be chilly, but Revolutionary War history buffs will have a great time in this part of upstate New York any time of year. And Colonial Williamsburg, in Virginia, appeals to the American history fan as well.
From New York to California, from the Caribbean to Hawaii, a honeymoon, anniversary, and Valentine's Day are all great reasons to take a week or long weekend vacation for couples. But who needs an excuse? A romantic vacation is healthy for couples regardless of the reason. Have a great time!
