Trip-Planning TipsTravel Advice on Preparing a Memorable, Interesting, and Unique Trip
Some unique tips on how to ensure an upcoming vacation is everything you want it to be.
When preparing for a vacation, everyone knows there is a lot of planning involved—ranging from determining transportation needs and selecting lodging to finding someone to watch the family pet and check the mail. There are a few more somewhat unconventional steps to add into vacation preparations to add an extra level of enjoyment to your trip: Destination-Based Book or MovieExplore a different angle of the vacation spot by finding a fictional book or a movie that uses the upcoming destination as a background—don’t just look at guidebooks. Fans of the The Sound of Music see more than the typical sites of Salzburg, Austria by finding local spots that were used in the filming of the famous movie. Reading A Year in Provence will bring the French countryside to life before even stepping of the plane (and could also provide some ay trip suggestions, too). The local librarian or friends should have suggestions or check out some previously collected lists of books and movies. Make Special ReservationsMake reservations in advance for at least one special meal. Food is a great way to explore a new place and finding one special restaurant—one that provides local entertainment, highly recommended cuisine, or may just have a fun theme—can create a long-lasting memorable experience for the whole family. Dinner in Germany with an accordion player and lederhosen-clad boys performing traditional Bavarian dances, exquisite authentic French cuisine, and even breakfast with the Disney characters can be an image that will last longer in memory than the churches or statues from the trip. It may take some extra research to find an ideal unique meal, but it can be found through guidebooks, suggestions from previous visitors, and a little patience. Prepare for PresentsCreate a list of friends, family members, and neighbors that might appreciate a small gift. It’s easy to find inexpensive small souvenirs from every destination, but also think beyond the typical souvenir (everyone has enough magnets and key chains): a Christmas ornament from Scandinavia, hand sewn purses from Peru, or seashells from Hawaii are unique, won’t break your budget, and can fit easily into your suitcase. A book club or office might enjoy unique snacks like chocolate from Belgium, salsa from Mexico, or Turkish Delight from Turkey—just make sure the items can be cleared through customs first. Traveling is almost always a fun and rewarding experience—think outside the box when planning ahead of time can enhance your adventures.
