Cabo San Lucas, the quaint Mexican village on the Southeastern tip of Baja, offers the visitor white sand beaches, turquoise waters, fresh seafood and lots of sun. While many accommodations in this resort town charge for extraneous bells and whistles, Villa del Palmar Los Cabos Beach Resort and Spa offers all the best Cabo has to give, at an affordable mid-range price.
This 5-star resort, built in the shape of a horseshoe, opens out to a white sand beach and the undulating blue waters of the Sea of Cortez. Two swimming pools (connected by an Orca tunnel slide) sparkle in the courtyard, surrounded by umbrella-shaded loungers. A 50-seat jacuzzi, perpetually occupied by sun-baked vacationers with colorful drinks in hand, overlooks the beach.
Servers buzz about the loungers, breakers crash on the beach, wind rustles in the palm trees, and a volleyball game begins in the lower pool, with prizes for the winners. Sounds divine, but wait -- that's just the inner courtyard. The lobby is airy, 9 storeys high, and filled with the soft echoes of the mid-lobby feature: waterfalls.
Suites come in many sizes, with some able to accommodate up to 10 people. Room decor is simple: tile floors, small but well-equipped kitchens, sunken-tub bathrooms, and air-conditioning.
Rooms facing the interior courtyard overlook the beach and the Sea of Cortez. The sunrise, the sunset -- cruise ships and fishing boats -- all come and go before the wide-ranging sight lines of Villa del Palmar's generous balconies, a perfect place to perch.
Villa del Palmar boasts one of the best European-style spas in Cabo San Lucas, offering everything from hydrotherapy to massages to body wraps. Discounts available on individual treatments or spa packages for booking over a week in advance.
A full beauty salon and modern fitness center (stocked with free weights, aerobic and resistance machines, locker rooms and sauna) also grace Villa del Palmar's extensive grounds.
Villa del Palmar is truly a villa in its own right, with amenities too numerous to list. Here's a peek:
Rates start at $160 USD normally, and at $104 USD during Villa del Palmar's annual Winter Getaway sale. (Contact Villa del Palmar directly to confirm rates.)
It takes 20 minutes to walk from Villa del Palmar to downtown Cabo, or 5 minutes by taxi. Walking along the beach to or from downtown is possible and enjoyable, but this doubles the travel time.
A shuttle van serves travelers between the airport and Villa del Palmar, a journey of about 25 minutes. But be forewarned, after a few days at the Villa del Palmar in Cabo, it may be very difficult to leave.
