Luxury can mean resorts, day spas, bath treatments, vintage wines, gourmet foods and fine art museums. It's about a sense of place - bringing to mind tropical islands like Maui and the Bahamas, as well as Manhattan, Santa Barbara, Paris, and Florence. The luxury-seeking traveler can explore exclusive hotels and hidden bed and breakfast inns; upscale salons and trendy restaurants; or even set sail on a cruise for Hawaii.

But luxury is more a state of mind than how much you spend. With proper planning, anyone can afford a stylish vacation. Here are priceless insights and tips for making every travel outing memorable!

Save Travel Money on Vacation

The luxury of vacation time is often sacrificed in times of economic trouble. However, smart travel planning helps stretch those vacation dollars.

There's a recession coming, if it's not already here. Everyone's feeling the pinch. From the price of gas to the price of a gallon of milk (up to 4 dollars in my grocery store!), Americans have to figure out a way to economize. But that doesn't mean giving up travel completely. After all, vacations make for much better memories than just sitting around watching television.

There are some really good ways to take even a weekend getaway and not blow your travel budget. The USA has some fun and free activities in popular vacation destinations, for example, and even the luxury vacation town of Santa Barbara has cheap hotels and free activities. Down south of Los Angeles, Redondo Beach is a reasonably good facsimile of more upscale Southern California beach towns - but it's much more affordable, with cheap hotels and a down-to-earth sunny culture. And for an affordable luxury hotel in Redondo Beach, you can't beat the Portofino. So don't forgo all your travel plans; save money by using your vacation budget wisely, and make those memories!

Hotel Rooms and Suites

What is the first thing you do when you get to your vacation destination's hotel room or suite?

Open the curtains and check out the view
Plug in my cellphone and laptop, hook up the in-room internet
Collapse on the bed and turn on the television
Look in the bathroom to see if the hotel soap is worth stealing
Dump my suitcase and head back outside!
